My Story, And The Origin of Turbo Learner

Who am I and why should you listen to me? My name is Prakash Rao. I come from a family where education was and is paramount. I have a Bachelor’s degree (B.E. Honors) in Computer Science from the prestigious REC of Trichy (now NIT Trichy), a Master’s in Computer Engineering from Boston University and an MBA in Finance from New York University.

But it was not an easy trip. So long as I was in elementary school, I did very well at studies and was every teacher’s pet. I now realize that this was because my mother, a teacher, sat with me as I studied and helped me learn. When I reached middle school, my mother became busy with her own Ph.D. program and the demands of the school that she was the principal of.

My grades were abysmal. Since my mother could not spend more of her time and effort with me, she did the next best thing – she taught me to learn. In the spirit of “If you give a man a fish, he eats for a day, but if you teach him to fish, he eats for a lifetime,” She created a personalized learning process for me, and that made all the difference between getting poor grades as a middle-school student and finishing my honors engineering program with distinction. If I could do it, so can your child.

This system was the basis of a Ph.D. thesis. This system won an international teaching award. This system has helped hundreds of students become excellent learners.

After my mother retired from active work, she spent her time shuttling between her children and grandchildren. During one of her visits with me, we worked on upgrading her system to include modern education concepts and to fit it to the American education system. Unfortunately, before we could launch this, my mother fell ill and passed away. I launched 2018 in her memory and to celebrate her achievements.

Who Can Benefit From This System

While most students can use this system, there are some who will gain more than others.

For one, the smartest kids in class would look at any suggestion of coaching with disdain. To a large extent, they are right. They do not need the entire system, although bits and pieces may help them be more efficient in their education.

For another, there are many students who merely mark time in school, will drop out of high school at the first opportunity and start working in jobs that do not require either higher education or high grades in any level of education.

As John Heywood observed in 1546, “There are none so blind as those who will not see.” (This is derived from the Biblical verse [Jeremiah 5:21] ‘Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not’). I can only help those who are willing to be helped.

Of the remaining, this system helps:

  • those who struggle to learn at all,
  • those who learn well but struggle to get good grades,
  • those who wish to achieve great grades, and
  • those who wish to get a deep understanding of subjects so that they can pursue research in those subjects.

This is not subject-based like tutoring. It is not a skills training system like Kumon, Mathnasium, etc. It is not a test prep course, for example, SAT prep or ACT prep. This a revolutionary system that addresses the fundamentals, the foundation, and the framework of how children learn.

The outcomes of this program are:

  1. A personalized learning process that truly fits the individual student,
  2. Study skills to make the best use of the time allocated to learning,
  3. Improved logical, creative and critical thinking skills, and
  4. Better grades.

The last result depends on how well the student applies the techniques.
